Devils’ hellish skid continues with another overtime defeat

Another extra period, another crusher for the Devils.

Mark Scheifele scored his second goal of the game at 4:43 of overtime, and the Jets beat the Devils, 4-3, Saturday night at Prudential Center in Newark.

It was the Devils’ fifth straight loss — three of them in overtime. The Devils last won on Nov. 21, a 5-2 home victory over the Canadiens.

Scheifele tucked the puck past Keith Kinkaid as the Jets won their second straight, improving to 3-3-0 over their past six games.

In the overtime, the Devils failed to convert a two-man breakaway as Laurent Brossoit stopped Taylor Hall, who was set up by Nico Hischier.

The Devils rallied with two goals late in the third period to tie it. Jesper Bratt scored on a power play at 15:41, and with Kinkaid on the bench for an extra attacker, the Devils swarmed the net and Hall poked in the equalizer on a goal-mouth scramble with just under two minutes left.

Marcus Johansson, also scored for the Devils. Kinkaid stopped 34 shots.

Devils defenseman Will Butcher was a healthy scratch, sitting for the first time this season. They also scratched right wing Stefan Noesen and defenseman Steve Santini.

Former Devil and four-time Stanley Cup winner Claude Lemieux was a guest at the game. His son, left wing Brendan Lemieux, was a scratch by Winnipeg.
