Henrik Lundqvist could’ve left at trade deadline if he wanted to

The Rangers presented Henrik Lundqvist with the option of moving at the trade deadline, but the 36-year-old franchise goaltender declined while citing his commitment to the club’s rebuild, Garden executive chairman Jim Dolan told The Post on Wednesday.

“We told Hank that if he didn’t want to ride it out through this process, we’d find a good landing place for him,” Dolan said during a conversation at his MSG office. “But he said that he wanted to stay and see it through.

“I’m very happy that’s the way he feels. I think with him at the top of his game, that gives us our best chance of competing for a playoff spot next year.”

After a halting October, Lundqvist carried the team with three subsequent months of brilliance, going 18-8-2 with a .932 save percentage and 2.32 GAA from November through Jan. 20. But he was unable to maintain that level facing mounting breakdowns in front of him. The goaltender finished the season at an overall 26-26-7, with a .915 save percentage, and a 2.98 goals-against average.

“I think Hank was able to keep us in the playoff race when we probably didn’t really belong there the way the team was playing,” Dolan said. “Having him in place gives us a great foundation going forward.”
