Islanders’ Johnny Boychuk returns tooth to ex-teammate
Johnny Boychuk is the consummate teammate, even to his former teammates.
The Islanders defenseman, upon seeing ex-Bruins teammate David Krejci’s tooth on the ice after it was knocked out during an open-ice hit, casually scooped up the loose chiclet and delivered it to the Boston bench.
Boychuk and Krejci were teammates on the Bruins from 2008-14, winning a Stanley Cup together in 2011 before Boychuk was traded to the Isles, but it’s unclear if the familiarity helped him identify the tooth’s owner.
As nice a gesture as it was amid an eventual 2-1 shootout loss for the Islanders, count Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy among those not sure what to make of it.
“I love Johnny. He’s a good guy. But that’s just weird,” Cassidy said.
