Lou Lamoriello cleans house, and Islanders need a coach
That didn’t take long.
Roughly two weeks after Lou Lamoriello took over the Islanders, he has cleaned house, firing coach Doug Weight and general manager Garth Snow, the team announced.
Lamoriello will take over as general manager. Snow and Weight will remain with the organization in some capacity. The Snow news isn’t a surprise, considering Lamoriello was expected to be running the show after coming over from the Maple Leafs.
In 12 rocky years under Snow’s leadership, the Islanders reached the playoffs four times and won one playoff series. Weight, however, is a bit surprising, considering he did a solid job after replacing Jack Capuano a year ago and has a strong relationship with looming free agent John Tavares. But the Isles didn’t come close to replicating their production under Weight this year, finishing seventh in the Metropolitan Division.
“The New York Islanders would like to thank both Garth and Doug for their dedication to the franchise,” Lamoriello said in a statement. “Both started their tenures with the franchise as players and grew as tremendous leaders to the positions they held.”
