Sydney Esiason engaged to hockey star her dad has accepted
Now that he’s put a ring on longtime girlfriend Sydney Esiason, Maple Leafs winger Matt Martin is hopeful to score one of his own as the Stanley Cup playoffs approach.
On Sunday, the former Islander popped the question to the 25-year-old daughter of WFAN host and one-time Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason, after several years of dating.
“Chirped him so hard about ruining a surprise party last night and then today he fooled me completely. Jax your parents are getting married!” Esiason gushed on Instagram, Jax being their beloved rottweiler. “I can’t wait to spend forever with you babe! I love you ❤.”
First linked in 2013, the couple of five years initially met on Twitter. Esiason, a former anchor of Sports Illustrated’s SI Wire, recalled the first time Martin, then a checking-line force for the Islanders, met her die-hard Rangers fan dad.
“I was really nervous to bring him to the house, that he played for the Islanders was a main concern of mine,” Sydney, 22, told The Post in 2015. “My mom welcomed him with open arms, of course. She’s the sweetest person ever. My dad walks into the kitchen with a Brad Richards Rangers jersey on acting like this is what he wears every day, like it was totally normal and just said, ‘Hey, Matt, how’s it going?’ and shook his hand. It was actually great because it broke the ice.”
The Rangers-Islanders rivalry is no longer a major concern. In 2016, Martin inked a four-year, $10 million deal with Toronto, and Esiason has since headed north with him.
