Breaking: Rey Mysterio & Cody Rhodes Set to Collide in Star-Studded Tag Team Match at NJPW Dominion

This Saturday in Osaka, Japan one of the most beloved stars of all time will step into a New Japan Pro Wrestling ring for the very first time.

While it’s been known for over a month that former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio would compete at NJPW Dominion on June 9th, fans have been anxiously waiting and speculating over who his opponent might be. We can now officially confirm that the master of the 619 will be competing in a star-studded tag team match, joining forces with two of the most iconic names in the history of Japanese wrestling – the junior heavyweight legend Jushin Thunder Liger and the 7-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroshi Tanahashi.

It could be argued that at one point each of those three names were considered the single greatest performer in their respective niches, boasting more than 80 years of collective experience between them.

The reason behind this rather unique matchup actually stems from “The Villain” Marty Scurll and his – well, villainous – behavior throughout the 2018 Best of the Super Juniors tournament. The former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion was frequently admonished by Liger, who sat in on commentary during most of the tour, leading to a few unpleasant confrontations between the two.

During Monday afternoon’s Super Juniors Finale, Scurll was involved in a post-match altercation with Tanahashi, putting the Ace in a submission hold after the closing bell had already rung. Seeing enough, Liger made the save and chased off the Bullet Club foe, who then demanded to face each of them at Dominion in order to “kill all the legends” at once. Apparently that invitation also extends to one, Rey Mysterio.

This Saturday at NJPW Dominion we can officially confirm that Rey Mysterio, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Jushin Thunder Liger will team up to face Bullet Club’s Marty Scurll, Cody Rhodes and Hangman Page in a massive six-man tag team match.
