Kasper Schmeichel considering leaving Nice in January

Kasper Schmeichel has not made a flawless start to his career at OGC Nice, with the former Leicester City goalkeeper now showing an intention to leave the French club.

L’Équipe report that Schmeichel is considering parting ways with Nice in the upcoming January transfer window after the Danish international has failed to instil himself into the club’s cultural need.

The report suggests that Schmeichel has shown a lack of professionalism during his short-lived stay in the Ligue 1 side thus far. He reportedly warms up very little and keeps himself isolated from others in the training. Unable to understand why he needs to do heavy workouts like the outfield players, he questions the mode of his training.

Nice signed him to be a leader within the group. But since arriving from Leicester in the last summer transfer window, the Dane has built up a habit of staying indoors. He is not considered one of the influential figures in the dressing room. Furthermore, his abilities don’t adhere to what Lucien Favre demands from his goalkeeper.

During his days at Leicester, Schmeichel played behind low blocks, where his shot-stopping skills came in handy. But with Favre willing to play his team with a high line of defence, the distance between Schmeichel and the defence line becomes too vast for the veteran to cover.

As a result, the former Premier League winner has not managed to turn himself into the “flying goalie” that the former Borussia Dortmund manager would’ve desired. In the 2022/23 season, Schmeichel, who has a contract with the French side until June 2025, has played 10 matches, including seven in Ligue 1.
