Ligue 1 reaches €33m a year deal to sell TV rights to Sub-Saharan Africa

L’Équipe report that BeIN Sports, the company with the rights to negotiate deals in foreign countries on behalf of the LFP, has struck a major new deal for Ligue 1 to be broadcast in Sub-Saharan Africa worth €33m a year.

The new six-year deal that will begin next season provides rights to Canal + and Kwesé to broadcast all Ligue 1, Ligue 2 and Coupe de la Ligue matches in Africa, a €20m-a-year improvement on the previous €13m a year deal that had been brokered with sub-Saharan African broadcasters.

This deal is yet more proof of Ligue 1’s ascension to the top of the world footballing stage, but an agreement that also serves to underline the disparity in terms of amount raised by selling rights overseas in comparison with the Premier League, that takes in €1.3bn a year in broadcasting rights deals with foreign countries, compared to Ligue 1’s current €80m-a-year attainment in this regard.
