Allegiant's Theo James Is Adorably Obsessive About His Grooming Rituals

There are few actors who've got that whole smoldering-at-all-times thing down as well as Theo James. I'm guessing that was one of the factors that went into Hugo Boss's decision to tap the handsome Brit as the face of the company's newest cologne, Boss The Scent. I got a chance to catch up with James (who also plays the mysterious and ass-kicking Tobias "Four" Eaton in Allegiant, the third movie in the dystopian sci-fi Divergent series). And for the record, he is exactly as beautiful in person as you might think—tough job, I know, but I took one for the team. He let me in on what it's like to be fronting his first big ad campaign, embarrassing karaoke moments, and what he's downright obsessive about when it comes to grooming.

What drew you to working with Hugo Boss? "It made sense to me. It was in line with my sense of style. Hugo Boss is iconic and classy but also understated. There's this sense of old-school with a bit of a contemporary aspect to [the brand]."

What do you like about Boss The Scent? "It's rich and quite masculine. Luckily I was of fan of it, because if it smelled like shit, that would be unfortunate."

Your character Four in the Divergent series starts off pretty mysterious and has an intensity to him, which is similar to what the Boss campaign evokes. In real life, you don't have social media—is it intentional to keep that mystery there? "It's not directly intentional, but as an actor, I think if you give too much away of yourself, you lose something. I used to have my own Facebook page from my school days, but I got rid of that too."

You used to front a band and seem like a big music lover—if you had to live with one song for the rest of your life, which one would it be? "Not sure if I could pick just one, but I remember singing Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together' at karaoke and embarrassing myself. It has good and bad memories."

What's the best piece of grooming advice you've ever gotten? "Using sunscreen, because the sun effs up your skin. I'm a pretty keep-it-simple kind of guy."

Is there a grooming activity you like to take a break from when you're not working? "Shaving, definitely. You have to shave whether it's for events or for roles, and you can get painful skin from it, so I like to take a break from that. And actually, weirdly enough, doing my hair. Having groomed hair all the time is kind of a pain in the ass. It's nice to just not have to do that for a week or two."

Do you have a nighttime routine? "I don't really have a routine, but I have quite Greek skin, so I'm obsessive about washing my face. That's kind of boring, right? What's your routine?"

I use oils and serums, and I'm pretty OCD about cleaning my teeth. "That's good. I'm also obsessive about cleaning my teeth. I don't have oils and serums but am definitely obsessive about cleaning my teeth. I have to do it three times a day."

I also floss and use an AirFloss "What's an AirFloss?"

It's a device where you can put your mouthwash in it and it shoots it out between your teeth at the click of a button. "I gotta try that. It sounds good. Where do you get an AirFloss? CVS?"
