Lou Lamoriello chats with Anders Lee’s agent

The Islanders desperately don’t want what happened with John Tavares to happen again with the man who took over his team captaincy, Anders Lee.

Yet the big-bodied Lee is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, just as Tavares was last summer before he signed a deal with his hometown Maple Leafs. So it appeared to be an encouraging sight for the Islanders that Lee’s agent, Neil Sheehy, was at the team’s practice facility speaking with team president Lou Lamoriello before their 6-1 win over Tavares and Toronto at the Coliseum on Thursday night.

“He comes all the time,” Lee said, trying to downplay the encounter.

Sheehy, who is based in Lee’s home state of Minnesota, backed that up, writing in an email to The Post: “Nothing new!”

The fact is the 28-year-old Lee likely would not have been given the captaincy unless Lamoriello was relatively comfortable the sides will come to an agreement on a long-term deal. Lee has almost laughed off questions about the process all season, going back to the refrain that “things will work themselves out.”

But he could hardly put into words what it meant when he scored his 22nd goal of the season in the second period and the fans started chanting, “That’s our captain.”

“It’s an extremely special moment,” Lee said. “It’s awesome.” It’s kind of hard to describe. Pretty cool.”

There was a scary moment late in the second period when Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk took a skate blade to the neck from Leafs forward Mitch Marner. Boychuk went to the locker room quickly, holding a towel to the cut, but he was able to return midway through the third.

“Thank the Lord on that one. It was so close,” coach Barry Trotz said. “You talk about ‘A life you never know’? It’s a matter of inches. This one was not even inches. It was a matter of a mili-inch. We could have saw something very ugly.”

Defenseman Thomas Hickey was a healthy scratch, having just played in Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to the Flames, his first game back after a 10-week absence following a concussion. He was replaced by Scott Mayfield.

Robin Lehner was solid while making 34 saves playing in his fourth straight. He was coming off a bit of a dud against Calgary, when he allowed three goals on 27 shots. The other goalie, Thomas Greiss, has played just eight of the past 27 games, dating to Dec. 29.
