Ten candidates who could become Rangers’ next coach
Here is a not all-inclusive list of potential candidates for Rangers’ coaching job:
Jim Montgomery, U. of Denver: Former NHL center, won NCAA tournament last year.
David Quinn, Boston University: Five years at BU, has pro coaching experience as head man in AHL, assistant in NHL.
Rick Bennett, Union College: Under contract through 2022-23, though. Won NCAA in 2014. Played 15 games for the Rangers in early 1980s.
Sheldon Keefe, AHL Toronto Marlies: Extremely close to Leafs GM-in-waiting Kyle Dubas, has been in AHL for three years after three extremely successful seasons with OHL Sault Ste. Marie.
Dan Bylsma: Flamed out in Buffalo after two seasons but has the Cup that he won in his first season in Pittsburgh in 2009 on his résumé.
Darryl Sutter: Known to get his players’ attention, as do his two rings from directing the Kings to the 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup.
Dave Tippett: Eight years with the Coyotes following six years in Dallas. Disciple of tough checking and no-nonsense hockey.
Patrick Roy: Had three years behind bench in Colorado, the first wildly successful, the second and third not so much. Before that, was very successful running the QMJHL Quebec Ramparts eight years.
Bill Peters, Hurricanes: Is believed to own at out clause with Carolina, and could seek other positions.
John Tortorella, Blue Jackets: Unlikely to become available, but if somehow he does if Columbus goes down early, Rangers could become interested in reunion.
